Each Word Families activity is based around a common base word and its related family words.
The activities support:
spelling of multi-syllabic words
an understanding of parts of speech
syntactical awareness
vocabulary development (including many Tier-2 vocabulary words)
decoding multi-syllabic words

ACTIVITY: COMMON BASE WORD
Students find the common base word in a word family.
ACTIVITY: BASE WORD
Learners break down the base word into its morphological components and are introduced to the individual meaning units within the word.
ACTIVITY: MATCH THE WORDS TO THEIR PARTS
Students practice matching words to morphemes.
ACTIVITY: CONSTRUCTOR
Gives students practice building and discovering words from morphemes.
ACTIVITY: DECONSTRUCTOR
Students break words into their individual morphemes.
ACTIVITY: FLIPPER
Students practice reading the words within the family.
ACTIVITY: SPOKEN CHAINING
Students orally respond to prompts asking them to change affixes.
ACTIVITY: SPELLING CHAINING
Students spell words as the affixes change.
ACTIVITY: PARTS OF SPEECH
Students sort the words from the family into parts of speech categories and explore the function of the words in sentences.

Students fill in the correct family word in sentences.
